To Infertility… And Beyond!

by Jen on May 10, 2011

I’m having fantasies of smooching another man.  No, not Marshall this time.  This time???  MY GYNECOLOGIST!!!  That’s weird, isn’t it?  But if you met him – it wouldn’t be weird.  The fella is UH-DORBS!
George and I met with him today to discuss all of my fertility testing.  As it appears, my tubes are clear and my uterus (although a bit misshapen) is ready for action.  No big surprise, but my hormones and lack of ovulation seem to be my largest obstacle.
To combat my fouled up endocrine system, Doctor Adorable prescribed Clomid.  Clomid is one of the most common ovulation stimulants on the market (and the performance enhancing drug of choice for a one, Mr. Manny Ramirez).  (I just got brownie points from George for that little tidbit.)  (And yes, I realize I just linked to to Wikipedia.  It knows e’rything.)  In my case, it will be taken on my 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th cycle days.  You’ve most likely never heard me utter these words before (at least not since high school), but “Come on, period!!!”
The good doctor sat with us for a really long time explaining and detailing things that (thanks to the help of my online community) I sort of already knew.  But still, the formality of this man that I trust, and who seems genuinely interested in helping us take home a baby, made me feel all the more prepared.  Plus, my future baby daddy was there too, saving me the struggle of having to remember all the details to relay to him later.  My doctor didn’t blow smoke up my ass.  He detailed alarmingly low success rates and, at one point, even uttered, “…. and you may never have a baby.”  But I feel good with him.  And that feels good.
George and I aren’t sure if we will ever go the route of a reproductive endocrinologist.  From the start we vowed to give this our best shot without toying with too much medical intervention, and if it was in the cards for us, great.  If not, our child would come to us in an alternative and equally perfect way.  Either way, our baby is going to show up sooner than later.
My Dearest Clomid,
Help a sister out.  I will be forever grateful.
Warmest Regards,

Jen

Hubby and I have a gorgeous 2 1/2 year old thanks to Clomid. We did two rounds, and total success on the second. I wish you all the luck in the world, and good luck with the mood changes! Those are a b*%@h, but so damn worth it! :)

Jen, I experienced secondary infertility and had amazing success with some dietary changes and acupuncture and chinese herbs. I am sure you have heard so many stories… probably too many. But if you want to hear a story from an "old" lady who was told at the age of 41 that is was "highly unlikely… because we can't say impossible" that I would ever get pregnant again by my OB and was then preggo 7 months later. And did it again the same way at the age of 45… let me know. Always keep the hope. Crossing my fingers for you with regards to the Clomid working :) Also, my acupuncturist says that they (acupuncturists) can help with the Clomid side effects… so that might be something to look into as well.Lots of unsolicited advice :P Feel free to tell me to piss off :)

I had hot flashes on Clomid, so just be aware that can happen. And I LOVE the "Budgeting for Infertility" book. First important expense? Books about infertility…

Ooooo… Good luck with the Clomid!!! I was on that too for 3 cycles and thought I was going to go crazy! It made me so depressed/grumpy/moody it was RIDICULOUS!! We did get our little Ruby out of that cah-razy time though! Come to find out, that (the moodiness) can be an indicator of an underlying endorphin deficiency. I'm taking low-dose naltrexone now for the endorphin deficiency and can't believe the difference in my mood in general.

Hope it goes well with the drug. My sister-in-law had great success with it and I have a 10 year old neice because of it and God helped out too.
